What Causes Hair Loss in Women?

We tend to think of men’s hair loss as having one basic cause—simple genetics. This is reductive, but not entirely off-base—most men’s hair loss is hereditary in nature. Women’s hair loss, on the other hand, can come through any number of causes—and determining the cause of your hair loss can be one of the keys to finding a solution.

At Full Circle Hair Restoration Center in Columbus, Ohio, we’re dedicated to the why of hair loss. We know that you want answers as to why your hair is thinning, and we’re here to provide them. We do so through extensive trichological testing, which is painless and non-invasive but still effective in showing us the condition of your hair and scalp.

We invite you to learn more about the different causes of female hair loss, and then to join us at Full Circle to learn more about your own struggle with thinning hair.

Causes of Female Hair Loss

Hereditary hair loss can affect women just as surely as it can affect men—but there are also a number of other medical conditions that can lead to thinning hair, and in some cases to scarring on the scalp, too.

  • Central Centrifugal Cicatricial Alopecia - Most common among African-American women, CCCA typically begins in the middle of the scalp, or the crown. Hair loss then radiates out in a circular pattern. While this hair loss is usually gradual, it can sometimes progress quite rapidly.

  • Androgenetic Alopecia - Androgenetic alopecia is a major cause of women’s hair loss, and in fact it is often called female pattern baldness. Trichology confirms that this condition is caused by DHT, a byproduct of testosterone which blocks healthy hair growth. In other words, this is hair loss caused by hormonal imbalance.

  • Medical Treatment - Many forms of medical intervention have hair loss as a side effect, including cranial radiation, chemotherapy, and many other medications.

  • Nutrient Deficiency - Poor lifestyle choices can also lead to hair loss, especially when the follicle does not get the nutrients it needs to produce new hair.

  • Alopecia Areata - In this autoimmune disease, your body attacks the follicles like they are foreign invaders, inhibiting hair growth.

  • Alopedia totalis - This even more extreme form of alopecia can lead to total loss of hair on the head—not just in patches.

  • Alopecia universalis - This rare form of alopecia involves hair loss not just on the head, but all over your body.

  • Telogen Effluvium - This stress-related condition can impede the proper functioning of your follicles and is especially common in women.

  • Trichotillomania - Another stress disorder, this condition involves the compulsive biting, pulling, or twisting of hair. The implication can be hair loss and long-term scarring.
